The artist, Kathe Kollowitz, used her artwork to show her pain and suffering that she was feeling after the loss of her child, and the experience of war. Her work is very emotive and the harsh contrast between light and dark is what reinforces these feelings of depression and sadness that she had. Her woodcuts are powerful as she is easily able to make us feel the same variety of emotions that she felt. The images she creates generate a sense of sorrow for her even though we do not know her. we able to empathise and understand we she must have been going through. Even though we know that she has used similar tools throughout the piece, she uses diverse methods of creating the beautiful pieces of art by changing how much pressure she uses as this will effect how much material she will take away. I was influenced by her style of creating the woodcuts and I have created some of my own based on her technique. I used the more modern lino cut technique but remembering to take her work into consideration by carefully deciding how I could create shadows and highlights in the piece.
