Wassily Kandinsky is known for being one of the main contributors to the abstract art movement that lead to expressionism and cubism. Kandinsky created several masterpieces during his life, including composition VII and colour study: squares with concentric circles. Kandinsky fascinates me due to his use of colours and bold geometric shapes in his work. The way that Kandinsky builds his compositions is an insight to the human mind and his imagination. It allows us to view the world in a similar way that he would have seen it. By not showing distinct objects or landmarks our minds are forced to use the clues in the artworks to understand where Kandinsky was getting his inspiration and information from. I am fond of this type of art as I believe in how art is very subjective and we should respect the opinions of others. My opening ourselves up to others opinions of art we are able to then make more informed decisions on our interpretation of the pieces. My favourite piece of work by Kandinsky is 'swinging' which is a oil painting on board that measure 705 x 502 mm. I am enraptured by his use of harsh, distinct lines to create to positive and negative space. Kandinsky used a range of diverse colours including complementary and contrasting colours. Where geometric shapes overlap each other he changes their colour by either making them lighter or darker. This adds a sense of depth by creating an illusion of transparency in the shapes. What I find fascinating about the piece is that depending how you view it you can interpret it in different ways.
