Pablo Picasso was known as one of the most significant artists of the 20th century. His multitude of art forms are known around the world however, he is mainly known for his work in the cubist movement. His style of art was key in the formation of this movement as his piece 'les demoiselles d'avignon' was very groundbreaking at the time and was seen a controversial piece that shocked the art community. This piece was shocking because its sexual nature. Picasso took the idea of painting nude women and transformed it by taking subject matter that was shunned, like prostitution, and placed it in plain view. looking a the piece in more detail Picasso used warm tones to bring realism to the women bodies which contrasted the two dimensional and geometric style that Picasso painted them in.

Another piece by picasso is 'L'Atelier' which is a study of his studio near Cannes. This piece caught my attention due to the contrast between the neutral colours of the interior and the vibrant colours of the outside. In my opinion I believe the neutral colours represent a depressive state that picasso might feel when he is inside his studio. The yellow and green tones of the outside may represent the a happiness that picasso may feel when he is free of the confines of his studio. In this piece picasso has scraped away the paint away to add detail, tone and texture. Removing the paint in this way allows for picasso to add subtle highlight that brightens the room.
