Mark Rothko moved through many artistic styles until he began doing rectangular forms floating on a stained field of color. He was influenced by mythology and he was insistent that his art was filled with ideas. Rothko also stated his views in many essays and reviews. Rothko's art was filled with 'emotional content' seen through his range of styles that were evolved from a figurative style to an abstract view.
Rothko's early work showed an ability to use both Expressionism and Surrealism in the same piece. He was not bound by just one genre of art. He always looked for new ways of expression and this led to his Color Field paintings. These are thought to use color to convey a sense of the spiritual. Rothko was a social revolutionary in his ideas which started from his youth. He was known to be a supporter artist's total freedom of their expression and he felt this was being compromised by the market and arts value.
