I have recently looked at the work of Gillian Ayres as she explores space and colour. Her paintings have a sense of equilibrium as she balances out the vibrancy of the colours by pairing bold colours with muted tones. Her later paintings are more chaotic and are less about the colours and space and more about the need to put down her ideas and thoughts. Her more chaotic works are a statement about herself whereas the calmer pieces are a study of the qualities of colour. I find her work to be very helpful when understanding what colours can work together and what colours should not be seen together as they will only take from the painting and not add to it.
